A push is on to get more local food into institutions around Grey Bruce in 2011.
Queens Park is providing grants to help get local produce and meat into daycares, long term care facilities, schools and hospitals.
Co-ordinator of the Grey Bruce Local Food Project, Freeman Boyd says the money doesn’t allow you to just go out and buy food locally.
He says the idea is to use the money to set up a network between producers and the institutions.
Boyd says someone has to co-ordinate what the quantities are, what the prices will be and what the delivery times will be.
He wants to establish a pilot project with Grey Bruce Eat and Learn, that will offer nutritional breakfasts, snacks and lunches in 73 area schools.
The Co-ordinator of the Grey Bruce local food project admits one problem is the amount of food produced locally, compared to the need.
Boyd says there is plenty of beef on hand but when it comes to vegetables and most fresh fruit, they don’t have enough.
However, he feels the production will be available in 2011 once a proposed local produce auction near Lucknow gets going in the spring.
