Libraries throughout Grey-Bruce are looking for teen writers.
The Write for 2011 contest is now open, and teens from across the region are being invited to submit short stories, poems, and comics.
Nadia Danyluk — the Children and Youth Services Librarian at the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library — says three winners will be chosen in each category and will receive a cash prize as well as have their work published in the Write for 2011 anthology.
Danyluk says two local authors and a previous poet laureate will be judging the submissions, and she says that can be intimidating.
But she adds it’s a great opportunity for young writers to get feedback on their work from published professionals.
Danyluk says they’ve had a great response over the years, and believes there will be more this year with the addition of the comic category, which is brand new.
The short stories have a limit of five thousand words and the poetry has a limit of 75 lines.
The library has kept anthologies of winners over the years and Danyluk thinks it’s a great way to keep track of what youth are thinking about at a certain point in history.
There is also a contest for a cover design for the anthology.
