The Walkerton Image Committee is going to have to do with a less money this year.
Brockton Councillor Anne Louise Gibbons is not happy with the large amount of money the Walkerton Image Committee is receiving.
She calls the original 30 thousand dollar budget unfair to rural taxpayers.
Gibbons says while the Image Committee does good work in Walkerton. It doesn’t appear to have a direct benefit to the smaller communities of Cargill, Elmwood or Pinkerton.
She believes the money would be better spent on municipal debt or road work.
Gibbons says beautiful downtown murals and flower arrangements mean very little to rural residents dealing with poor roads in need of upgrades.
And while Council isn’t willing to pull the plug on the Image Committee, they did see fit to take 29 hundred dollars out of the Image Committee’s budget.
It now has 27 thousand dollars.
Gibbons calls the 29 hundred dollars a symbolic gesture and a good first step.
However she would like to see the Image Committee become completely self sufficient within the next three years.
The Walkerton Image Committee is responsible for a number of downtown Walkerton initiatives to boost Walkerton’s Image.
It was one of the decisions by Brockton Council, who approved this year’s budget with a zero per cent tax increase.
