The Conservative MPP for Bruce Grey Owen Sound has come up with a new plan to save the jails in Owen Sound and Walkerton.
Bill Murdoch says the provincial government should scrap the Niagara Escarpment Commission.
Murdoch tells Bayshore Broadcasting News the province would save more money than the three to four million dollars it would save by closing the two local jails.
In fact, Murdoch claims that number would be well over four million, just by eliminating the salaries of Commission staff.
Murdoch believes the government can do away with the NEC because all affected County official plans have adopted the same rules.
Murdoch says the staff at County offices are capable enough to review any development application.
And he adds it would eliminate one more step for a developer if they didn’t have to go to the NEC.
Murdoch claims when Conservative Premier Bill Davis introduced the NEC, it was always their intention to disband the Commission after ten years.
