Brockton is going to fight the announced closure of the Walkerton jail.
Mayor David Inglis is meeting Friday with Steven Small — the Assistant Deputy Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
Small will meet with jail staff from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Walkerton fire hall.
There is also a community rally for the Walkerton jail — and residents are asked to be at the fire hall at Noon on Friday.
Inglis says his message is to postpone the closure of the jails in Walkerton and Owen Sound.
Inglis met with Minister Jim Bradley last week but says he came away discouraged.
Inglis takes issue with the province saying that they would have to spend 800 thousand dollars to bring the Walkerton jail up to standard.
Inglis argues the jail is in good shape and needs between 80 and 100 thousand dollars of work at best.
Inglis says the economic impact of closing the jail will be huge to the community.
It’s estimated the loss of the Walkerton and Owen Sound jails to the local economy would total six million dollars (3 million each).
