Former cabinet minister Helena Guergis says the Prime Minister’s Office ran a smear campaign against her.
The Simcoe Grey M-P is blaming the Prime Minister’s office for orchestrating a ‘smear campaign’ that got her ousted from cabinet and caucus.
At a news conference in Collingwood Friday morning — a teary Guergis said there was a concerted effort to spread lies and smear her reputation and she blames Stephen Harper’s staff.
Guergis was tossed from the Conservative caucus and cabinet last year after allegations arose about possible criminal conduct and Harper sent the matter to the Mounties.
The RCMP cleared Guergis and her husband, Rahim Jaffer, but Guergis was never asked back into the Tory fold.
Guergis says her life has been turned upside down unfairly and without due process.
Guergis adds she was pregnant at the time and the controversy affected her greatly to the point where she was stressed out.
But Guergis says she is grateful her son Xavier — who was at the news conference — is healthy.
Documents Guergis obtained under an Access to Information request show the R-C-M-P was asked to investigate unsubstantiated allegations which include fraud, extortion, cocaine use and parties involving prostitutes.
Guergis says voters are entitled to the information and asks if voters can’t trust the political leadership of the Tory party to stand up for justice, who can they trust?
Prime Minister Harper says she was ejected because of political troubles and that the caucus doesn’t want her back.
