Construction has begun on the new Wightman Telecom Fibre Optic Distribution Facility in Hanover.
The facility is located in the Industrial Business Park and will house the fibre optic cables and equipment needed to offer Wightman’s fiber to the home project.
Hanover Mayor Kathi Maskell tells us this is incredible news for the town.
She says fibre optics will make Hanover even more competitive and provide young people with technology opportunities.
It is going to take two years before the fibre optic cables reach every Hanover home.
The fibre to home network involves installing fibre cables throughout the town to all residents and businesses.
The construction of the Distribution Facility is phase one of the project.
Phase two will include the construction of a tech support and retail office next to the distribution facility.
Currently Hanover is outfitted with copper lines and a coaxel cable systems which provides residents and business owners with 5 to 10 megs of service.
With fibre optic cables, residents will have a minimum a 20 meg capacity and could boast 100 megs or more if necessary.
Maskell is eager to get the project underway as it will provide increased service to residents and businesses.
Wightman has already outfitted Mount Forest, Harriston, Listowel and Palmerston with fibre optic cables.
