Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch is applauding the government’s move on MS and the sex offender registry. But the local Conservative warns much more must be done.
Murdoch wants fingerprint technology to part of the name application process in Ontario.
Under the province’s Change of Name Act — Murdoch says it’s possible for convicted sex offenders to legally obtain a new name and assume a new life.
He says this means convicted sex predators like Graham James, the former hockey coach, could easily assume a new life under a new name in Ontario — just as he was doing in Mexico recently.
Murdoch calls sex offenders heinous criminals and says anything that can be done to keep these individuals from changing their identities should be done.
Murdoch is also calling the government’s new MS expert panel a first good step but says it is not enough.
Under the changes — Canadians who have received foreign MS treatments like liberation therapy can receive continue treatment in Canada.
However this only applies to those who have gone out of country for these therapies.
Murdoch calls this unfair — saying the government should begin offering MS trials right here in Canada.
Murdoch says while there is risk, it should be up to the MS patient to decide whether or not they want the treatment.
The Conservative MPP also says Canadians shouldn’t have to travel to foreign countries for these therapies, as they should be offered right here at home and the government should cover the costs.
