Four years and 75 thousand dollars later — the Bruce Grey Catholic School Board is finally going to be able to demolish the 1891 wing of St. Mary’s High School.
Trustee Chair Norm Bethune is glad this long drawn out battle with the City is over.
Bethune notes the board has spent 75 thousand dollars on engineer and architect studies of the abandoned building at the City’s request.
He is relieved they will be able to demolish the 120 year old building since its cost prohibitive to repair.
Bethune feels the money could have been better spent elsewhere.
Bethune says the Catholic Board will now happily comply with the concessions set out by the City of Owen Sound concerning the demolition.
This includes creating a memorial to the old school.
This faade which will resemble the architecture of the front of the original school will be constructed using salvaged materials from the old school.
Superintendent of Business Cathy Colton says it’s too soon to say how much this will all cost.
The demolition will take place this summer.
