Public Education Committee Member Jackie Ralph says Mental Illness Awareness Week is really a public awareness campaign.
This year, the week’s theme is “Face Mental Illness”.
The campaign features the stories of people living with mental illness and also focuses on others affected, such as families, physicians, and researchers.
Ralph says one in five Canadians will experience mental illness during their lifetime.
She says it’s important to educate people about the nature of mental illness and reduce the stigma associated with the disease.
Ralph says misunderstandings about mental health prevent many people from getting the help they need.
The Association is also spending time at Georgian College this week talking to students about mental illness.
