That is the theme of fire prevention week in Ontario which goes from now until October 11th.
On Soundingboard acting fire chief Phil Eagleson says they are focusing on he leading causes of home fires which are, cooking, heating equipment, electrical problems, cigarettes, candles and matches.
He says household clutter also is a major factor in residential fires.
He says additionally, they continue to educate residents on why working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan are essential toward ensuring everyone gets out safely in case of fire.
Eagleson says families should sit down and plan how they would get out of their house in the event of a fire.
He says a good investment would be window ladder that can be used to escape from the second floor if you can’t get down the stairs because of smoke or flames.
Eagleson also says smoke can be a killer in a house fire, so people should keep close to the floor to avoid inhaling toxic fumes.
