Be prepared to be stopped by OPP while you’re driving around the region this weekend.
The annual OPP fall seatbelt campaign continues.
OPP Constable Mark Kinney says the initiative started at the beginning of the week and continues until the end of Thanksgiving weekend.
Kinney tells us police have stopped about two thousand vehicles so far and they hope to pull over a total of 30 thousand.
Kinney notes if you are caught without your seatbelt on, you could be fined a 110 dollars.
Kinney adds if you are in a collision and you weren’t wearing your seatbelt, you could have two demerit points added to your permanent driving record.
He tells us they are seeing a decline in the number of people not buckling up.
Last year, just under 31 thousand vehicles were checked and 61 people charged.
Kinney says leave yourself reminders to buckle up until it becomes a habit.
