Some residents of Watson Street in Wiarton are un happy about the changes to be made to their street.
Construction is to begin next week on Watson Street for new water and sewer mains.
South Bruce Peninsula Council passed a by-law last night to impose a fee on the Watson Street residents for a water and sewer connection charge.
Brad McRoberts, Public Works Manager, couldn’t say exactly how much a monthly payment would be for residents because they all vary.
But McRoberts says it’s approximately $860 per year.
Before council voted on the motion, many of the Watson Street residents left the meeting.
Josie Myles, a Watson Street resident and speaker for the neighbourhood says it seemed like a done deal.
Josie says her words didn’t mean anything to council.
Josie’s husband, Kent Myles says council passed a by-law on September 15th to begin construction, but didn’t invite the residents to the meeting.
Kent says they just shoved it through without giving it too much thought.
He says they are looking at $20 thousand or more for sewer lines to their house.
Kent says other residents want the water line, but to do the sewer at the same time is just too much.
The water line is being paid from a $227 thousand comrif grant.
Josie says she is afraid some of her neighbours will loose their homes because they can’t afford it.
Mayor Gwen Gilbert says council will continue to look for the best rate to offer residents.
McRoberts says a benefit to the changes, is some properties will be allowed to be severed.
He says they are restricted right now because there are no services.
