The job is half way done but there’s a long way to go.
We’re heading into week two of the 11th annual food drive put on by the Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling organization.
Speaking on Soundingboard, General Manager Vince Cascone says they’re shooting for over 10,000 pounds of non-perishable food goods, prefereably in cans.
After the first week of collection, just over 2,000 pounds has been realized.
Cascone says they’re not sure why the first week’s collection has been so light.
All they can do is hope the second week will be a banner collection week.
This food drive is different in that you leave your donation in a plastic bag beside your blue box on your collection day this week..
Cascone says his crews will pick up the donations during their daily routes in the areas they serve.
He says over the past decade over 26-metric tonnes of food has been collected, thanks to the generous donations of residents.
The foods are then transported to the Salvation Army facility in Wiarton at the end of each collection week.
In Wiarton volunteers sort out the food and it is distributed to the various food banks in the areas that Bruce Recycling serves
