The head of the Elementary teachers federation of Ontario is calling for an end to standardized testing of students.
David Clegg tells Beach News that there are several problems with the current tests.
Clegg says they are not standardized since the questions change from year to year and the same students are not sampled.
He says the decade old program was set up to determine how the new curriculum was being implemented, and was not designed to test students or teachers.
Clegg says it has taken on a life of it’s own and is a waste of $90-100 million a year.
The ETFO president says the money would be better spent on reducing the funding gap between Elementary students and secondary students.
Currently, the province provides about $700 more per student at the secondary level.
Clegg says that money doesn’t go to teachers but is for supplies, books etc.
The Grades 3, 6, and 9 math, reading and writing scores were released this week and showed a mixed result for students in our area.
