The number of candidates running in Huron Bruce is now up by one.
Glen Smith of Port Elgin beat out Michael Starenky of Wroxeter to gain the Green Party nomination in the Huron Bruce riding.
Smith — a former Huron Bruce Marijuana Party candidate in 2004 — was elected in front of a small handful of party supporters at last night’s nomination meeting in Port Elgin.
He says he became a Green Party member a couple of weeks ago because of their policy on marijuana use.
Smith says he understands that nuclear energy is the bread and butter of this area — something that is not included in the Green Party platform.
He says Bruce Power is a great corporation that interacts with the people in this community.
However, he says he will promote a green policy to include alternative forms of energy generation like wind power.
Smith says while the Green Party platform is similar to the New Democrats’, the NDP have had no real impact on the political front since they were formed.
Smith hopes to get more youth involved in politics by going to schools during the campaign.
He says the riding needs to draw some attention and by possibly creating some controversy he hopes to do that.
Smith says the Huron Bruce riding is one of the great places to live in Canada.
Smith joins Liberal Greg McClinchey, Conservative Ben Lobb, and Tony McQuail of the NDP in the battle for the Huron Bruce seat on October 14th.
