As we are into the early stages into the federal election campaign, a special visitor dropped into Bruce County.
Stephane Dion addressed the entire student body and faculty of Sacred Heart High School.
Dion discussed many issues facing our country from climate change to infrastructure.
Dion spoke on one issue that touched home with Walkerton residents which is food and water safety and with that he announced a Liberal government would spend an additional 50 million dollars on food safety.
The funding will allow them to hire an extra 100 food inspectors.
Walkerton is the scene of the E. coli water outbreak in 2000 that killed seven people.
Dion says the federal government has changed the inspection of meat by doing more paper work then actually inspecting the meat.
Dion says a Liberal government will bring in more inspectors to do what is necessary to inspect the meat properly.
An issue many students were hoping Dion would address is financial support for post secondary education.
Dion responded by saying he would announce in the coming days his plan to help students with paying for post secondary education.
Dion says he is happy to hear Green Party Leader Elizabeth May will be allowed to participate in political debates.
Dion says it’s a good day for women and Canadian democracy.
Prime Minster Stephen Harper announced yesterday Canadian troops will come home from Afghanistan in 2011 for sure.
Dion says the only way the end of date of 2011 will be respected and done in a proper way is to vote Liberal
Dion also spoke on farming saying for the better of the future we need to see farmers become more green.
Dion says by increasing diesel costs it will hopefully make farmers become more energy efficient and therefore make them more competitive around the world.
