Durham area raw milk farmer Michael Schmidt will appear in court again today.
He is accused of ignoring a court order to stop providing raw milk.
Much of yesterday’s testimony centred on whether Michael Schmidt admitted to selling unpasteurized milk in York Region.
A reporter (The Toronto Sun’s Brett Clarkson) was questioned by York Region lawyers on whether Schmidt admitted in an interview to providing milk despite being under a court order not to.
The reporter maintains it was not a clear admission, though lawyers disagree.
In his defence Schmidt said quote “The cows give milk in the morning and in the evening and … the cow-share owners will have access to their milk.”
While selling raw milk is illegal in Ontario, it is not illegal to drink it if you own the cow as many farmers do.
Raw milk is banned in Ontario because experts say it poses health risks, including E.coli and listeriosis.
The Durham farmer still faces a trial in January related to an armed raid on his farm in November, 2006 when health officials seized his milking equipment.
