Brockton Council continues to make efforts to go green.
Council finally passed a motion to ban plastic water bottles from municipal buildings.
The motion would have passed at the last meeting, but councillors wanted to see a change that would allow bottled water in times of emergency.
And when it comes to garbage collection, Councillor Chris Peabody has asked council to look into the option of using green bins for curbside compost pick up.
Peabody says he prefers the idea of green bins to subsidizing for backyard composters.
He says this way everybody can have their compost picked up at the curb, even those who don’t have a backyard.
Peabody says there’s also a higher participation rate because some don’t want a backyard composter as it attracts raccoons and other wildlife.
Peabody also hopes to switch to clear garbage bags.
He says other municipalities about the same size as Brockton that made the switch, saw waste diversion increase by 75 per cent.
Peabody says that would save a lot of garbage from ending up in the landfill, extending the life-span for the dumps.
A public meeting will be held on both matters sometime in October.
