The Grey Bruce Public Health Unit is stressing the importance of proper car
seats for children.
Public Health Nurse Meghan Wilkie says car seats are the law in Ontario, and
failure to provide proper seating for children can have disastrous results.
Wilkie says car seats should never be placed in the front of the car, adding
that the middle position in the back seat is the safest.
Infant seats should be rear-facing until the child is one year of age AND 22
pounds, or 10 kilograms.
Wilkie says it’s not necessary to turn the seat around at that point, and
may be safer to leave the seat rear-facing for a while.
Parents should always check that the straps of the seat are not twisted, and
are adjusted appropriately for the child’s size.
Wilkie says it’s important to use the seat’s tether-strap.
Drivers who do not use child restraint systems can face a fine of 110
dollars and 2 demerit points.
Wilkie says the more serious consequence could be the injury or death of a
child.
There are three car-seat checks coming up in Grey Bruce.
