Not only will Police be watching you on the roads and water this long weekend — but they will also patrol our trails.
The OPP are concerned about the number of fatalities and injuries from All Terrain Vehicle crashes.
Constable Steve Starr says ATV use is becoming a popular pasttime and there are more injuries reported because of it.
The law permits children as young as 12 to ride an ATV on Crown Land if accompanied by an adult.
But Starr says there are many cases where people are breaking that law.
Starr says they are concerned about the maturity level of some ATV riders because some people don’t have the knowledge or training to drive the machine.
He feels some ATV drivers underestimate the potential of the machines as in most cases, they can reach highway speeds.
Starr recommends drivers not only wear helmets and proper clothing but also take ATV training programs and make sure there is proper supervision.
The number of ATV fatalities has climbed from 14 in 2005 to 25 deaths last year.
