The Ontario Trillium Foundation presented Safe ‘N Sound with a cheque yesterday for 29 thousand dollars.
Safe ‘N Sound Chair Kerry Lee says they applied for the funding in January, and they’ve known since spring that they would be receiving the money.
She says the money allows them to hire a full-time program co-ordinator, which they’ve already done.
Jenny Wright-Elliot will start with the organization next week.
Lee says Wright-Elliot brings a lot of experience to the table, as she currently works for the Women’s House program in Cape Croker.
Lee says having a program co-ordinator will help them continue to build community partnerships.
She adds while she appreciates the hard work volunteers put in, it’s great to finally have someone who can devote the time it will take to get a shelter service off the ground.
Lee says one of the first things Wright-Elliot will do is examine different models for emergency shelter, and decide which is the best fit for the Owen Sound area.
Lee says she’s absolutely thrilled that after more than a year of work, things will finally start falling in place.
She adds they have a board meeting coming up this Thursday night, and they’re hoping to explore ways to partner with the Victorious Living Centre and their plans for a shelter as well.
Kees Van Aalst from the OTF says there is a real need for emergency shelter, and that’s one of the reasons the foundation thought Safe ‘N Sound really deserved the funding.
