When in doubt, toss it out.
That is the recommendation of health officials across the province as part of the listeriosis outbreak.
It has claimed at least 13 lives across Canada and there have been a total of 36 listeriosis cases.
Public Health Nurse Pamela Scharfe says each health unit has investigated any place that may contain some of the processed products recalled by Maple Leaf.
That includes hospitals, nursing homes, child care centres and school cafeteria’s.
Scharfe admits some health units found places that had not heard of the recall.
But she says if you have any doubts about the products in your home, take it back to the store where you purchased it — or toss it out.
Scharfe notes some people experience only mild flu-like symptoms from listeriosis.
The illness may start suddenly with vomiting, nausea, cramps, diarrhea, severe headache, constipation, or fever.
Seniors are at high risk as the average age of confirmed cases is 77.
