Minister Hearn announced today in Wiarton that the federal government is providing a total of 280 thousand dollars for small craft harbour facilities in Wiarton, Meaford and Howdenvale.
Many dignitaries were in attendance including Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller, South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Gwen Gilbert and members of council and Meaford Councillor Lynda Stephens.
The work at the Wiarton marina involves adding medium-sized stone to the outer side of the breakwater to provide added protection to the structure and marina basin behind it.
At Meaford, the work is already done and the money is being spent on the recently completed dredging at the mouth of the Big Head River.
At Howdenvale, the rehabilitation of the wharf will involve repairs to the timber deck, fenders, stringers and piles of the wharf structure.
Plans and specifications are still being finalized for the Wiarton Marina and Howdenvale but work is expected to start in the fall.
Hearn says they have been very fortunate to have more funding put into the small craft harbour budget.
Hearn says it’s great to see when the federal government can work alongside local municipalities and other associations to get work done quickly to improve the infrastructure at these 3 harbours.
Hearn also announced funding yesterday in Tobermory for repair work to the North Wall in the town’s harbour as well announced the Flower Pot Lighthouse is in the process of being transferred into the care of Parks Canada.
