The planning is over and it’s time to celebrate.
Southampton’s 150th anniversary party begins today at 5pm “at the flag” at the foot of High Street.
On Soundingboard this week Spokesperson Steve McMillan says the opening ceremonies will kick off four days of music and activities for the entire family.
This afternoon a formal ceremony will be held with former mayor Art Eby acting as master of ceremonies.
McMillan says following that a dramatic event will take place as a local group of children will use sign language to “sing” “We Rise Again” by the Rankin Family.
He says it’s quite impressive to see.
Even the traditional Cruise Night car show will be bigger to help kick off festivities.
McMillan says antique car owners from everywhere are being asked to bring their autos for display as the parking area for the cars will be extended from the foot of High Street to Grosvenor Street making the area twice as large than usual.
He says there will be plenty of live music throughout the four-days up and down the street, free of charge.
One of the highlights on Saturday is the giant parade that will take place at 10:15am.
Parade starts at the corner of High and Grenville Street; heads west on High; turns south at Grosvenor; east along Palmerston; ending at Victoria Street.
McMillan says they have 75 entrants in the parade and the procession will take one hour to pass any given point.
