Dozens of swimmers are getting ready to tackle the Owen Sound Harbour in this weekend’s Eddie Sargent Memorial Cross the Bay Swim.
It takes place tomorrow morning at the Gazebo at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
Chris Evans will be hosting events on shore, and he says there will be three swimming courses this year…one, two, and four miles long.
Evans says all three of the swims begin at the same time.
He says the swim is a challenge meant to be fun, not a race.
However, he says some people time themselves for their own information.
Evans says the swim was begun by former Mayor and MPP Eddie Sargent arranged the first swim in 1955, which featured a swim from Balmy Beach to Leith.
The current event was organised in 1997 and has drawn people from as far away as California and Belgium.
Anyone can participate in the swim, however they have to bring their own safety person and boat to keep an eye on them in the water.
The swim begins at 11 AM, and swimmers should allow at least half an hour for registration.
For non-swimmers, there will be food, prizes and music, and updates on the swimmer’s progress.
