Hand-cyclist Ramesh Ferris received a warm welcome in Owen Sound this morning.
Ferris is cycling across Canada in the “Cycle to Walk” campaign to eradicate polio from the planet.
About 25 people turned out to greet Ferris on the front steps of City Hall.
Ferris had polio when he was an infant in India, and as a result he lost the use of his legs.
He walks with the use of crutches.
He came to Canada as a youngster and wants people to know that although polio seems to be gone in North America, it is still a problem in some countries.
On a return visit to India, Ferris says he saw many people on their knees and crawling because of the disease.
He says they are needlessly crippled, since there is a vaccine available to prevent polio.
To date, Ferris has raised over $250,000.
He hopes to raiseĀ $1 million before reaching the east coast this October.
Later today, Ferris will be in Meaford and he’ll spend Thursday and Friday in the Blue Mountains – Collingwood area.
On Saturday, Ferris will be in Wasaga Beach.
