We told you earlier this month about former principal Linda Soehner who’s been teaching almost 40 students with reading disabilities.
Because of expanding demand and a funding glitch Soehner was just about ready to pull the plug on the special program for dyslexic students.
However the community support since our story ran has been overwhelming.
Soehner says she had one lady give her 500 dollars because one of her relatives is dyslexic; parents are holding BBQ’s and Veyance Technologies in Owen Sound has donated 1000 dollars to the cause.
She says between those donations and an upcoming charity golf tournament in September she should have enough money to tide her over until she can receive another Trillium grant.
She’s also had to implement a minimal fee of 15 dollars but says some families have offered to pay more to help those who can’t afford it.
Soehner says once the next Trillium grant runs out she’ll likely have to fundraise within the community to keep the program going.
The classes are being taught out of an office at Participation Lodge in Holland Centre.
Students, both children and adults, come from across the region including Port Elgin, Kincardine, Hanover and Owen Sound.
