Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley wants to speed up the court system.
The Attorney General says too many court cases are simply adjourned over and over again.
Queens Park wants to move criminal cases thru the court system faster, but it appears most of our area is already meeting the targets.
Attorney General Chris Bentley says the average time for a case to be completed in Ontario has nearly doubled in the last 15 years… to 205 days last year.
At the same time, the number of appearances for each case has averaged 9.2.
Bentley wants to cut both those numbers down by 30%.
A check by Bayshore Broadcasting news shows Grey, Bruce and Huron counties are well within the government targets.
In Owen Sound – Grey county court, the average case involves 5.9 appearances before it is finished… and it takes an average of 116 days.
The number of appearances actually is up in the last five years but the length of time for each case has dropped significantly.
It is similar in Walkerton – Bruce county court where the average case involves 6.8 appearances and 134 days.
Figures for Huron county (Goderich court) show 5.6 appearances and an average of 132 days for a case to be settled.
All three (Grey, Bruce, and Huron) counties fall well under the government goals.
Simcoe county is another story. In Barrie there are 8.5 appearances on average and 240 days for a case to be heard.
Toronto has the worst record with 12.6 appearances and 307 days.
