Thousands of babies have been baptized and hundreds of couples have been married within the walls of St. George’s Church in Owen Sound.
And now the church — at the 10th Street and 4th Avenue East — is in need of help of all of those and more to help pay for serious repairs to the historical church.
Nancy King — a parishioner as well as the Chairwoman of Capital Campaign Committee — says the church is in need to pay a bill of over half a million dollars for structural repairs.
Back in 2008 the church was told the steeple needed extreme repair or it would risk falling down.
The church underwent the repairs this past year and the billed tallied to 507-thousand dollars.
Now – King explains the roof needs repairs to the tune of 250 to 300-thousand dollars.
King stresses there has been many donations by parishioners to the church’s capital campaign but no federal or provincial government money has been made available to the cause.
The only money that has been given to the campaign is from the Owen Sound facade grant and – as King says – is just a drop in the bucket to the huge tab.
King is hoping the public will come forward with more donations.
She says this church is not only beautiful but historical to the city landscape as it is the longest functioning church building in Owen Sound.
King says the capital campaign fund continues and any cheques made out to the church should be marked capital campaign at the bottom.
