The Medical Chief of Staff at the Hanover and District Hospital wants a cardiac rehab centre to be located in southern Grey Bruce.
Doctor Robert Basilij says it’s medically relevant to the area, residents suffer from one of the highest rates of cardio vascular disease in Ontario.
Basilij feels patients would greatly benefit from a cardiac rehab centre close to home.
Patients that have suffered a heart attack currently have to travel 50 to 100 kilometres to receive this critical treatment in larger urban centres.
Owen Sound does have a cardiac rehab clinic although it’s only opened two days a week and the wait list is long.
Basilij wants the Local Health Integration Network to take a leadership role in this matter.
Basilij says residents of Grey Bruce don’t live as long as those in larger urban centres because they don’t have access to the same services.
Cardiac Rehab is an important part of a patients rehab which involves supervised exercise for those who have just suffered a heart attack.
