Unlike most areas, where it’s tough for a parent to find space for their kids in a daycare, Tobermory has a pretty small demand for child care services.
The child care centre in Tobermory is traditionally a seasonal operation, open three days a week for six months of the year.
But Bruce County Council has approved 27 thousand dollars, each year, for a two-year pilot project that will see the centre stay open during the winter months as well.
Director of Social Services and Housing, Terry Sanderson, says they have eight all-day children enrolled, and a few more for before and after-school care.
He says they’ll test the program for two years, and if it’s successful it will continue to operate year-round.
And if the demand picks up, he could even see the program extended to five days a week.
Sanderson believes it’s important to have a child-care centre to service every community in Bruce County.
He says it’s something that makes the area more attractive for people looking to relocate or think about starting families.
