There will be a need for over 400 new affordable housing units within the next decade.
That is according to Bruce County Housing Services – and they are out with a new strategy to deal with this issue.
Housing Manager Susan Earle says the Affordable Housing Strategy involves partnering with the municipalities, financial institutions, and housing developers.
Earle says they will be touring the various communities in the region to talk about the strategy and ask for their assistance with it – something that will be put off until after the upcoming municipal elections.
Earle adds they currently have a waiting list of 350 people looking for affordable housing.
She says affordable housing qualifies as any accommodation that costs less than 30 percent of the total family income per month.
Right now – the greatest demand for affordable housing is along the lakeshore.
Earle says developers are very often building high-end houses and apartment complexes rather than smaller and otherwise more affordable dwellings.
That coupled with a generally high demand for housing is driving up the costs.
