The Tom Thomson Art Gallery is getting a much needed building upgrade.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller announced the federal government’s 60 thousand dollar contribution toward a new 120 thousand dollar freight elevator for the art gallery.
The City of Owen Sound will pick up the other half.
Director and Curator Virginia Eichhorn says this is no ordinary elevator.
She says the art displays are quite sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity – therefore they need to be kept at a constant temperature and humidity level.
The new elevator allows for the transport of art, whether it be paintings or sculptures, in a climate controlled environment so as not to damage the art being transferred in or out of the gallery.
Eichhorn says the old elevator no longer works and needs to be replaced.
She expects the new one will not have to be replaced for at least another 20 to 30 years.
