It seems there has been no real change in the bed bug situation in Grey Bruce.
Public Health Manager with the Grey Bruce Health Unit Bob Hart says while the situation is not getting worse, it is not getting any better.
Hart says the Health Unit is continuing to receive calls about bed bugs and other insect complaints.
He adds the bugs do not carry any type of communicable diseases and as such are more of a nuisance than a public health threat.
However since the bugs can inflict a very itchy bite it is possible to develop a secondary infection due to scratching.
Hart says some health units, such as Toronto Public Health, have unilaterally declared bedbugs a health hazard, however there is no general consensus on whether bed bugs can truly be classified as a health hazard.
Hart says the jury is still out as far as an effective treatment for bed bugs, adding people have been using everything from chemicals to high heat treatments in an effort to stop infestations.
