Saugeen Shores councillor Diane Huber will be looking after the town’s interests on the upcoming Accommodation Review Committee work that has been set up by the Bluewater District School Board.
In Kincardine, Deputy Mayor Anne Eadie has the same responsibility for that municipality.
Huber says when the public meetings begin, expected in January, she hopes the community will speak up on the importance of Saugeen District Secondary School — one of the facilities earmarked in the review.
Huber is a graduate of the school and she believes the school plays a very important role in the community.
She says she believes a high school in Saugeen Shores won’t be an issue but it’s important that everyone speak up so the committee knows.
Meanwhile, Eadie says five schools are up for review including Kincardine District Secondary School; Elgin Market and Huron Heights, along with KTTPS elementary.
She says as a former educator, she believes in the value of local schools and that sometimes the provincial formula for funding works well in the cities but is lost in the rural areas.
Eadie says she wants to serve on her ARC group so that she can hold accountable the Ministry of Education to rural needs in education.
Committee members are being given some background information on the schools affected this month.
Next month, public meetings will begin.
Each review committee will have to come up with solutions to maximize the provincial funding available.
It could take over a year for results.
