Saugeen Shores can become a destination point, based soley on its parks and trails.
So says Dave Cheer as he delivered the parks and trails advisory committee annual report to town council recently.
Cheer says highlights of the year include the opening of Shoreline Trail that follows the shoreline of Lake Huron from Port Elgin to South Street in Southampton; the grand opening of the trail linking Saugeen Shores with MacGregor Point Park and the opening of the accessible playground at Jubilee Park in Southampton.
Cheer says there is more to be done and put in his first bid for 25-to-35-thousand-dollars to develop a waterfront plan and amalgamate the other plans that have come forward in the past few years.
He says it’s the hope of the committee that it would give council a guideline of where to go next in the development of the Port Elgin Beach area.
Cheer says they continue to look at alternatives on the trail system, rather than crossing Highway 21 in two different spots.
He says they’re looking at alternative crossings where there is a traffic light system.
Another goal is to provide more rest stops along the trail.
Cheer says washrooms would be a small part of it but they would also like to see drinking fountains established, along with benches and perhaps picnic areas.
He says the gaps between rest stops right now is too large.
