One of the final acts of the outgoing Kincardine council was to approve an expenditure of almost 180 thousand dollars to purchase ultraviolet disinfection equipment from Calgon Carbon Canada.
CAO John deRosenroll says it’s part of the Public Works Department plans to discontinue the use of chlorine in disinfecting effluent before returning the water to Lake Huron.
deRosenroll says chlorine has always been used in treating waste water but this is a step towards a greener community.
He says the ultraviolet equipment does a better job at killing bacteria in the effluent before it’s dischared into Lake Huron.
deRosenroll says the equipment will be purchased now and a maintenance contract will be negotiated over the winter with construction slated for next spring.
The ultraviolet system will be used for effluent treatment only.
Drinking water will continue to be treated with chlorine before being piped into the municipality’s homes.
Public Works Manager Jim O’Rourke presented the plan to council for approval however refused to talk to media following the meeting.
The purchase was approved at a meeting on November 17th.
