There will soon be a crossing guard at Durham’s northwest end along Grey Road 4.
It’s hoped the move will appease a number of parents who are upset with an earlier decision to discontinue in town busing in that section of town.
Until the crossing guard is in place — the students who are currently walking will be bussed again.
Parent Phil Hunt doesn’t think it’s enough — He says the crossing guard doesn’t address the fact that students still have to negotiate Grey Road 27 — which lacks sidewalks and is on a steep hill.
Grey County has designated that section of County Road 27 “a community safety zone” and reduced the speed limit to 40 kilometres an hour.
There is also talk about installing a sidewalk.
But Hunt is upset there are no sidewalks now — and he thinks its unacceptable to expect four and five year olds to travel the steep hill during icy and inclement weather.
Bruce Grey Catholic Superintendent of Business Cathy Colton says once the crossing guard is in place in January — a few other students who are currently bussed will also be required to walk.
She hopes the implementation of a crossing guard will put parents safety fears to rest.
