The need is there and its growing.
With word from Food Banks Canada of a 9.2 percent increase in the use of food banks in our country — the need has never been greater for the Christmas Hamper program of the Salvation Army.
On Monday, the Salvation Army’s Family Services Office in Owen Sound began accepting applications for those who want to receive a Christmas Hamper.
Alice Wannan — the spokesperson for the Grey Bruce Salvation Army — says they expect dozens of people to move through the application process as the need seems to be growing for the food bank.
A report from Food Banks Canada says people are going hungry — partly because they lost their jobs during the recession and their unemployment benefits are running out.
The report also says that while many people have found new employment — their jobs are in service industries and don’t pay enough to support them.
Wannan says the application process does not take long and all you need is photo id and they will walk you through the process.
She adds do not despair if you think you cannot get regular food bank services as the office will be open for clients until December 15th.
Wannan also says for those on the other side of the giving circle the need is great for donations to the hamper program.
All the trimmings and treats for Christmas dinner are needed for the hampers – but if you are unsure then simply a gift card to a grocery store can be dropped off as well.
The applications are being taken during regular business hours at at the Salvation Army Church and Daycare building on 14th Street West in Owen Sound.
Wannan says there is nothing to be ashamed of if you need help this year — you are not alone.
