Today is the last day for input on Bruce Power’s plan to ship 16 decommissioned steam generators.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is considering whether to grant the Tiverton-based nuclear generating station a licence to transport the low-level radioactive waste through the Great Lakes to Sweden for recycling.
There were two days of hearings in Ottawa late September, and the CNSC has been accepting written submissions ever since.
CNSC staff who reviewed the application have previously told the safety board the radioactive contamination inside the generators poses no risk to human or environmental health.
Many groups have been opposed to the move — including environmental groups, aboriginal leaders, and many mayors of communities along the route.
Bruce County Warden Mike Smith says his council supports Bruce Power, as does Huron County council.
