A program by the Heart and Stroke Foundation to place Defibrillators in public buildings likely saved the life of an Owen Sound student.
Last Monday, a student collapsed from a sudden cardiac arrest while attending class at the Owen Sound Campus of Georgian College.
Faculty and classmates who witnessed her collapse called 9-1-1.
Nearby faculty administered CPR while a staff member, trained in its use, retrieved the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that is kept on the campus.
The AED delivered one shock, which stabilized the patients heart rhythm.
Grey County EMS arrived on the scene, took over patient care and transported the woman to the hospital.
The patient is now stable and recovering in hospital.
The placement of the AED at the Owen Sound Campus was made possible by a contribution from Georgian College to the Heart & Stroke Restart a Heart, a Life Program.
As part of that program, since 2009 Georgian College has placed AED units at each of its seven campuses in Owen Sound, Collingwood, Orangeville, Midland, Barrie, Orillia and Muskoka and at the Kempenfelt Conference Centre.
