Changes are on the way for the Hanover and District Hospital.
The Hanover Hospital is going to give E-R nurses more authority.
Medical Chief of Staff Doctor Robert Basilij says the Hospital is creating ER Directives.
These new directives will provide ER nurses with the ability to order some tests and x-rays as well as administer certain treatments and medications on their own.
For example — an asthmatic patient won’t have to wait to see a doctor before receiving a ventalin treatment and a patient with chest pain can receive medication immediately.
Doctor Basilij says the new directives will allow the Emergency Room department to better utilize staff.
He points out a doctor can’t be everywhere at once, so having a nurse take on these responsibilities will be of great help.
Doctor Basilij says it will not only reduce wait time — but patients will also have quicker access to treatment.
The new ER Directives will come into effect in the New Year.
