The gloves came off as South Bruce Peninsula discussed signing an agreement with Genivar Consultants regarding an environmental assessment and draft design for another section of the Sauble Beach Water and Sewage works study.
Council chambers were jammed Tuesday night with residents from Sauble Beach waving placards saying “No Bylaw.”
Their wish came true.
Stating lame duck protocol, Mayor Gwen Gilbert told council they cannot pass the bylaw because the unbudgeted expense totals 90 thousand dollars.
Rules state lame duck councils can only spend up to 50 thousand dollars under those circumstances.
Mayor Gilbert suggested no action be taken and that the issue be part of the incoming council’s agenda.
Councillor Mark Wunderlich challenged the ruling, suggesting it’s just another stalling tactic and they should be moving ahead with the project.
No action was taken on the bylaw.
During a break as Bayshore Broadcasting News was interviewing Wunderlich, several Sauble Beach residents came over and the argument was on.
The residents say septic has been working for years and sewers aren’t needed suggesting Wunderlich was just playing up to his “buddies” in Sauble.
Wunderlich says the septic tanks are going to fail and then it really going to cost big money to repair the damage in the area.
