Some Saugeen Shores residents seem to have future dreams of joining the circus.
Coach John Craig says his new Acrobatics course at the Spring, Swing, and Flip Club are doing very well.
Craig went to Montreal in August to train with Cirque du Soleil.
He says parts of it were very intense, as they had to study the anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology of the sport.
Craig brought his knowledge back to Saugeen Shores, and has filled two classes at the club.
He says there is real promise from some of his students, and they’re already working on students doing handstands on others’ knees and shoulders.
Craig feels it’s important to have a class like this in the smaller community, because many have been asking him how they would get involved in the circus, or in something like Cirque du Soleil.
Craig says his goal is to develop a team of 8 to 12 athletes.
Acrobatics is currently a demonstration sport in Ontario, but as of September 2011, competitions and national championships will be held.
Craig is hoping to have a team prepared for that, and then eventually hopes to do local shows in the future.
While sessions are underway, there is still a chance to get started.
Craig says a new session will start December 7th.
