While you’re up and about turning back the clocks in your home, Grey Bruce Firefighters recommend you change the batteries in your smoke alarms as well.
Fire Prevention Officer Tom Potter says it’s the law to have working smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas.
For added protection, Potter says they recommend installing alarms in every bedroom of your home.
He also says if you’re not sure if you’re alarms are in working order, you can test them by pushing a “test” button or waving a piece of burning string below them, depending on which type of alarm you have.
Potter mentions there are a few different types of smoke alarms including talking ones which can speak to you in English, French or Spanish.
Others have a combination of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and kitchen or pause alarms.
The Fire Marshall is also reminding people that tampering with, or removing batteries from, a smoke alarm is against the law and can net you a ticket of 235 dollars.
