An Owen Sound high school is taking part in the National Schools Vigil to commemorate the sacrifice 68 thousand Canadians made during the great war.
Beginning at Noon Thursday at Owen Sound Collegiate and Vocational Institute — the names of those who died in the First World War, including 56 OSCVI alumni will be projected on a special screen in the Commons area.
Dave Alexander is a teacher at the school and one of the organizers of the local event and says this is being held in conjunction with a similar event in Ypres in Belgium.
Kathy Sinclair is one of the student historic interpreters who will explain the importance of this event to students and visitors alike.
Another student, Alex Poole says each name will remain on the screen for about 25 seconds and its expected about 9 thousand 700 different names will be honoured each day until the vigil ends on November 10th, the day before remembrance day.
Dave Alexander says this should be a very solemn event as people see the names of those who died in the First World War and once the students begin to see it, they will probably begin to ask a lot of questions.
A special ceremony to recognize the service of former OSCVI students will be held on Tuesday November 9th, at 2 PM.
Alexander says that is the time that the name of Driver Thornley Flarity, a former OSCVI student who was killed in 1918 will be flashed on the screen.
He says the public are welcome to the viewing during school hours, but must check in at the main office of the school first.
