The “Tuber Tub 2000” has been unveiled at the Owen Sound Farmer’s Market.
The new invention is essentially a bicycle powered root vegetable scrubber – built by Shane Jolley of the Local Motive Project.
A bicycle is attached to a wire cage which spins inside a cut-out steel barrel lined with a boot mat which scrubs the vegetables.
Jolley says the invention was meant to demonstrate what you can do with bicycle power.
Cory Eichman, Owner of the Saugeen River Shared Agriculture Farm, came up with the general idea for the Tuber Tub 2000.
He says he’s been growing vegetables for a long time – and was getting tired of the time consuming task of washing vegetables and the cold hands that come with that.
Eichman says the contraption is quite popular on the farm – they’ve been fighting over who gets to use it.
Both Jolley and Eichman have no real plans to market the device – they would just like to promote ways to reduce dependence on electricity and fossil fuels – through the use of human and animal power.
