The first flu clinic from the Grey Bruce Health Unit is being held today.
The clinic is being held from 1 PM to 8 PM at the health unit office in Owen Sound.
Manager of Vaccine Preventable Diseases Karen Sweiger says getting the annual flu shot is the most effective way to protect yourself from getting the flu.
Sweiger says influenza is very contagious and can cause potentially serious infection of the lungs.
The main symptoms of the flu are high fever, muscle aches and fatigue — and Sweiger says it can last for up to four days.
Sweiger also points out influenza can worsen many pre-existing health conditions and anywhere from two thousand to 8 thousand people die from the illness every year.
Sweiger adds the focus this year is to give the flu shot to young children ages 6 months to 23 months because they have high hospitalization rates.
A complete list of clinics can be found on the Health Unit’s web site at www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca
You can also get a flu shot at the medical clinics in Port Elgin and Kincardine Thursday night.
