The organizers of the Tim Hortons Georgian Cup Snowcross have confirmed the 2011 event has been cancelled.
While the cancellation was common knowledge in the community for weeks, race co-chair Peter van Dolder confirmed the cancellation this morning.
van Dolder relates the delay in making the official announcement allowed the eastside Snowmobile Club, the organizers of the event, to contact their many sponsors and supporters and inform them face to face about the cancellation.
The major factor in the move is the ongoing construction of the new Recreation Center at Victoria Park in Owen Sound.
The size of the project and the loss of significant parking space during the construction phase made the organizers choose to cancel the event for 2011
van Dolder admits the Club looked for an alternate site for this year, but they believe Victoria Park, with the massive Grandstand, is the only suitable venue for the Tim Hortons Georgian Cup.
Looking ahead, van Dolder hopes the event returns in 2012 stating it’s a tremendous event that benefits the city and region in many ways.
However, van Dolder states there will be no formal decision made for 2012 and beyond until the Rec Complex is constructed and they can assess whether the Tim Hortons Georgian Cup can be staged at Victoria Park.
